Restore the last session

This function is only available in the desktop app of the Aspect Model Editor.

The Aspect Model Editor remembers which Aspect Models are open in which window. On the next start, it opens these models again and restores the size and position of their windows.

What is remembered

For each window:

  • the opened workspace models (namespace, file name and Aspect Model URN) in the order of the tabs,

  • the active tab,

  • the window size and position, and whether the window was maximized or in fullscreen mode.

Only models which are saved in the workspace are remembered. New models which were never saved and models loaded only via copy & paste are not restored.

When models are removed from the session

The session is updated whenever you open or close a model or move or resize a window.

Situation Result on the next start

You close a tab

The model is removed from the session and is not restored.

You close an additional editor window

That window is removed from the session and is not restored.

You close the last editor window or quit the Aspect Model Editor

All windows and models which were open at that time are restored.

The Aspect Model Editor crashes, is killed or the computer is shut down

The last saved session is kept. All windows and models which were open in that session are restored.

Example: models A, B and C are open. You close C, then the computer is shut down. On the next start, A and B are opened again.

Models which no longer exist

If a remembered model was deleted or moved in the meantime, it is skipped and you get the warning The required Aspect Model <name> could not be found. in the notifications. All other models are opened. If a model exists but cannot be opened, you get the error The Aspect Model <name> could not be restored.

Models whose referenced elements are missing are restored nevertheless; the missing elements are shown as placeholders, see Missing references.

An additional window is closed again if none of its models can be opened. A window is only placed at its remembered position if its title bar is visible on one of the connected monitors, e.g. after a monitor was disconnected it is opened at the default position.

Switch the restore on or off

The restore is switched on by default. To switch it off, open Settings > Editor and clear Restore open models on start.

Session file

The session is stored in the file session.json in the configuration directory of the application, e.g.:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/org.eclipse.esmf.ame/session.json

  • Windows: %APPDATA%\org.eclipse.esmf.ame\session.json

  • Linux: ~/.config/org.eclipse.esmf.ame/session.json

The file is written atomically, so a crash while writing does not damage it. If you delete the file, the editor starts without restoring any models.
